Stop Shoulding All Over Yourself!
This way of thinking is erroneous. It can create unnecessary stress and pressure, as well as anxiety and depressive symptoms.
On one occasion, during a meeting with one of my former mentors, he noticed that I was going down my should path and feeling rather disappointed and miserable about various pressures, some self-imposed, and said to me, "You're shoulding all over yourself." I laughed, of course (!), broke out of my negative spiral and had an ah-ha moment.
My shoulds created a sense of dread, obligation and resentment. Perhaps, shoulding served a purpose in helping me get certain things done that part of me didn't want to do. But by
shoulding to force myself to do things, I was living in a way that was not fulfilling.
I now ask myself this question, instead:
What do I WANT to do and WHY?
I've found that connecting with my WHYs is much more motivating, sustaining, and fulfilling.
Living in a way that is in line with my values allows me to live in a way that I WANT.
